The challenge for Alpine Angus in 2009 and beyond is to build on the strong genetic base of which 036 and Lawson's Dinky-Di have been the cornerstones. Alpine Angus’ genetics meet that challenge. We use selected sires who bring performance, power and reliability to breeding.
Each of Lawsons Dinky Di, Rito 6656 and Koojan Hills Somethin Special are tested AMF. Test results pending for Atahua T.J.
In 2008, we offered the first crop of sons by Lawsons’ Dinky-Di, VLYZ191 (AI), (ET), (TNC) pictured left. We purchased Dinky-Di in 2005 aged 14 months. He is the number one sire in Australia for B3 and only Australian sire in the Australian Angus database who is under plus 3 for birth, plus 100 for 600 days and over plus 2.5 for IMF. He is in the top 1% for long fed/CAAB and short fed domestic index, top 5% for heavy grass fed and top 10% for terminal index. He is also a trait leader for calving ease, gestation length and carcass. Dinky- Di is the complete package. He and his progeny can be inspected at Alpine Angus by arrangement. Semen is currently available from Agri-Gene
In 2007, we secured the Australian rights to Rito 6656 OF 021 RITO 1I2, a bull selected by Willie Milne in the US, whose phenotype and structural soundness, combined with carcass quality, backed by top EBVs, make him an excellent sire for use in our stud and others in Australia. We now have a number of impressive calves by 6656 on the ground.
From New Zealand, in 2007, we secured the Australian rights and commenced to use Atahua TJ 141-05 (ET) pictured left, in our breeding program. TJ is structurally correct with outstanding thickness, good temperament, strong in the scrotal department and represents New Zealand genetics. Willie and Jim inspected TJ in New Zealand in 2007. He is a genuine out-cross sire who topped the 2007 New Zealand bull sales at $NZ57,000. He will reinforce structure and thickness in the Alpine Angus herd. He is an easy calving bull and his young calves show tremendous thickness and growth.
We are confident that these key sires, together with Ardrossan Casino, (introduced to our herd in late 2008) in current use will carry us forward at the forefront of the Angus breed in Australia. Other sires used:
Koojan Hills Somethin’ Special, WKHW26 (AI), a 7 frame score Future Direction son, a participant in the Angus progeny test program, round 2 at Trangie, purchased in 2003 who has made an outstanding contribution to the Alpine Angus program.
Te Mania Unlimited, VTMU3271 (AI) (ET) pictured right, trait leader for milk, scrotal and IMF. Now deceased, we purchased semen rights to Unlimited when he was a young bull coming into prominence;
